“It’s my life, it’s now or never. I ain’t gonna live forever. I just want to live while I’m alive.”
Those famous words from fellow New Jerseyan Jon Bon Jovi perfectly capture why I’m writing this. By most measures, I already have a great life. I travel, I’m happily married, I have two amazing kids, I enjoy a rewarding career, and I make time for fun. Life is full, and I’m rarely bored.
Yet somewhere along the way, I realized I was missing something. I wanted a challenge. I wanted something that would push me, inspire me, and remind me what it feels like to grow. That’s when I finally picked up the guitar.
For decades, it sat quietly in the corner of the room, more decoration than instrument. I always talked about learning someday but someday kept getting postponed. Well, about three months ago, I decided that if I was ever going to learn, now was the time.
Since then, I’ve practiced every day, sometimes twice a day, even if only for a few minutes. The secret isn’t finding hours of free time. It’s showing up consistently and taking one small step forward. Those small steps have added up in ways I never expected. In just a few months, I’ve learned more than I did in the previous 45 years of owning a guitar.
The progress has been incredibly rewarding. Every new chord, every song I can stumble through, and every milestone I reach reinforces the same lesson: growth doesn’t come from wishing you had started years ago. It comes from starting today.
